Animal Care Facility
Fairfax County Animal Shelter
Expansion & Renovation
Fairfax, VA
Cole & Denny Architects designed the new, central animal shelter for Fairfax County. Located on the site of the original shelter, the 26,600 SF facility provides state-of-the-art housing and veterinary care for 65 dogs, 104 cats and various reptiles, birds and other mammals. Also included are community meeting facilities, a veterinary clinic, and offices for the county’s Animal Control division. The project was designed for construction in phases to keep the facility functioning throughout construction. The building is designed with a “retail” emphasis to promote adoption and offer education for animal care and well-being. Large, welcoming public lobbies, meeting rooms, and visiting spaces provide clean and attractive environments for public interaction. The building employs sustainable design principles for LEED-Gold certification.
