ADA Design Excellence
Ariel Rios Federal Building
Accessibility Modifications
US General Services Administration
Washington, DC
The Ariel Rios Building was completed in 1935 and has housed multiple US Agencies. It was fully remodeled in conjunction with construction of the Ronald Reagan Federal Building on an adjacent site. Cole & Denny Architects was commissioned to redesign two existing entrances of the historic Ariel Rios Federal Building to provide ADA-compliant access. The design respects the monumental scale of the existing architecture, employing the same materials and finishes used in the original structure to enhance the new importance of the entrances. Cole & Denny received the GSA Heritage Award for Design Excellence for this project.
